Pulkovo prepares to scale up treatment facilities

Russian Aviaton » Wednesday April 16, 2025 15:41 MSK

Pulkovo is the only airport in Russia that uses technology to remove ethylene glycol from wastewater in treatment facilities. As part of Phase A of the second stage of the airport development, it is planned to expand the treatment facilities complex by 2.5 times. It is planned to start building additional treatment systems in 2025.

The entire volume of airport water passes through the treatment facilities, which after treatment becomes safe for the environment. A unique technology for removing ethylene glycol, which is used for de-icing of aircraft, was launched during the modernization of the treatment facilities at the airport in the period from 2019 to 2022.

The modernization project includes three stages: installation of an alarm system for the arrival of contaminated wastewater, implementation of automated information on the composition of wastewater, automatic control of the treatment technology.

The treatment facilities of Pulkovo Airport use a multi-stage treatment system, including anodic oxidation technology for the breakdown of ethylene glycol and anti-icing reagents. Wastewater treatment is carried out 24/7. The airport monitors 17 different metrics. Wastewater samples are collected and tested daily by the airport, weekly by an accredited laboratory, and the data is transferred to the North-West Interregional Department of Rosprirodnadzor every month.

“The airport’s main task is safety, including environmental safety. The solution we have implemented for the comprehensive treatment of airport wastewater has no analogues in Russia or in foreign practice. The facilities treat more than 20 substances, one of the main ones being ethylene glycol, which does not decompose in nature. We are currently working on scaling up the treatment facilities, because by the time the new surfaces are put into operation, it will be necessary to ensure the ability to process increased runoff,” said Yulia Korobova, Technical Director of Northern Capital Gateway (Pulkovo Airport).

In 2024, Pulkovo Airport processed more than 1.7 million cubic meters of runoff that came from runways and aprons.
