Chess festival Aeroflot Open 2025 in Moscow concludes

The 20th International chess festival Aeroflot Open 2025 has concluded in Moscow. The event was held from March 1 to 6. In the main tournament of this jubilee festival, 140 athletes from 14 counties participated.

The children’s tournament featured more than 40 young chess athletes.

The winner of Aeroflot open 2025 is Russian Grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi. This mrks Ian’s fourth triumph at the festival, having previously won in 2008, 2013, and 2015. Hungarian chess player Richard Rapport secured second place, while Russian player Andrey Esipenko finished in third.

The best performance among the women was achieved by Polina Shuvalova (Moscow), who received special prize from Aeroflot.

Among the young men under 15 years old, the winner is Adrian Sanches-Shananin from Moscow. The top spot among young women under 15 years old was claimed by muscovite Diana Preobrazhenskaya. In the boys' category under 13 years old, Nikita Kleymenov (Moscow) took first place, while in the girls' category under 13 years old, Alisa Genrietta Yunker (Moscow) came out on top.

The prize fund for the main competition is 19,6 million rubles, with the winner receiving 4 million rubles. The children’s tournament has a prize fund of 400,000 rubles.

Aeroflot Open has been held since 2002. In 2004, it was included in the Guinness Book as the biggest chess tournament in the world. The annual competition was suspended in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
