Aeroflot begins to operate direct flights from Moscow to Cuba. The services to the popular Cuban resort of Varadero are operated on wide-body Boeing 777 by Rossiya Airlines. The first flight departed from Sheremetyevo airport with almost a full commercial load.
At the initial stage, flights will be operated twice a week on Thursdays and Saturdays. In the future, the program of flights to Cuba will expand, depending on demand.
The decision to resume regular flights from Moscow to Cuba was announced during the visit of the Russian delegation headed by Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko and Aeroflot CEO Sergey Alexandrovsky to Cuba and within the framework of the 20th meeting of the Russian-Cuban Intergovernmental Commission in May 2023.
"Cuba is a key partner of Russia in Central America and it is absolutely logical that it is necessary to develop economic relations between our countries," — said Dmitry Chernyshenko, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation. — But Cuba is also a safe, affordable and visa-free resort where citizens of Russia prefer to rest. On behalf of the President of the Russian Federation, regular flights with Cuba are resuming from July 1. Thanks to this step, by the end of 2023 the total passenger traffic, taking into account charter and scheduled flights, can be about 150 thousand a person and thereby achieve pre-pandemic indicators".
"The air route between Russia and Cuba is one of the oldest international destinations of Aeroflot. The first regular flight to Havana was made in 1962 on the Tu-114 aircraft. This is not just a milestone in the 100 year-long history of Russian civil aviation, it is a story of strong friendship and mutual support between our countries. — Sergey Alexandrovsky, CEO of PJSC Aeroflot, notes. — Thus, regular air service between our country and Cuba only interrupted twice: during the COVID-19 pandemic and after restrictions were introduced by unfriendly countries. It should be noted that holidays in Cuba are traditionally in high demand among our passengers all year round and almost 100% commercial load of the first flight confirms this. I am sure that the resumption of flights to Cuba will have a positive impact on the development of tourism and economic ties between Russia and Cuba."
Varadero traditionally attracts beach lovers throughout the year. Thanks to Aeroflot's direct flights to Varadero, tourists will have the opportunity to get to the resort directly bypassing Havana.
