Army aviation crews of the Leningrad air force and air defense army of the Western Military District joined in extinguishing wildfires in the Voronezh region. Pilots on Mi-8 MTV5-1 helicopters conduct reconnaissance of fire centers. Also, together with the units of emergency services, they are involved in extinguishing them. Mi-8 helicopters are equipped with special spillways APU-5, designed for 5 tons of water. The pilots try to accurately dump water on the fires at altitudes from 50 to 100 m in conditions of heavy smoke.
During the first day, two WMD helicopters made more than 40 discharges, in total, they dropped more than 90 tons of water on fire centers in the Voronezh region.
