Sheremetyevo Airport serves passengers with electronic boarding passes on domestic flights

Russian Aviaton » Friday April 5, 2019 11:17 MSK

On April 4, 2019, Sheremetyevo International Airport began serving passengers with electronic boarding passes on domestic flights as part of the strategy to introduce automation and e-services. The new service is bound to help passengers save time by removing the need to print out boarding passes and the risk of losing them while also simplifying and speeding up the pre-flight procedures.

Passengers may get issued electronic boarding passes when checking in for their flights through the websites and mobile apps of their carriers, receiving the file on their mobile device. If needed, passengers can print out their electronic boarding pass using the dedicated reprinting equipment installed next to the check-in counters at the Sheremetyevo airport.

The Sheremetyevo airport uses two-step electronic boarding pass verification. The first step is to pass the pre-flight screening whereby the air security employees will use the automated control system to check and verify the passenger's documents. Next, the passenger will proceed airside and present the electronic boarding pass at the gate to board the aircraft. The documents will be checked by a superintendent using the dedicated control system.

Airlines have been notified of the launch of the service to accommodate passengers with electronic boarding passes. The procedure is carried out at the Sheremetyevo airport in accordance with Order No. 7 of the Ministry of Transportation of the Russian Federation dated January 14, 2019.

Passengers may check in for their flights online or through the check-in counters or self-service kiosks at the airport. To check in, a passenger needs to have the air ticket and passport on hand. In case of an e-ticket, only the passport will be needed.

On February 24, an order of the Russian Ministry of Transport came into force, allowing passengers to proceed to the clear area of the airport via an electronic boarding pass for self-check-in to the flight. Such a coupon can be used at the airport if there is an information system - an electronic database of inspection and a device that scans a bar code. At the same time at the airports will retain the possibility of self-printing or getting a ticket issued on paper.

Currently, passenger service with electronic boarding passes is introduced at Domodedovo and some regional airports.
