Sheremetyevo International Airport won the Evgeny Chibirev Wings of Russia national aviation award in the Airport of the Year, Group 1 category for airports with annual passenger traffic of at least 15 million. The winners of the award were chosen by a panel of experts based on the company's performance in 2018. The 22nd award ceremony was held in Moscow on April 16.
Andrey Nikulin, First Deputy General Director for Production of Sheremetyevo International Airport JSC (MASh JSC), received the award on behalf of the Sheremetyevo airport: "It is of particular value that we won this award in the year that the airport is celebrating its 60th anniversary. For us, this is a significant and solemn moment when we look at what we have achieved and make new plans. Our strategy and investment program will allow the airport to reach the infrastructure's target traffic capacity of 100 million passengers per year by 2021 and become a Top-10 world's largest hub airport in the future. Our job is to ensure the implementation of this strategy with advanced infrastructure, new technologies and the highest level of service for our passengers, customers and partners."
2018 was an essential year to the development of the airport: Sheremetyevo entered the league of the world's largest airports with annual passenger traffic of more than 40 million people per year. As part of the preparations for the first soccer World Cup held in Russia, Sheremetyevo implemented a series of large infrastructure projects that were unique for Russia. Just before the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the airport commissioned Terminal B, with a capacity of 20 million passengers per year, and the inter-terminal passage connecting the Southern and Northern terminal complexes with tunnels. In early 2019, the new terminal, built in the style of Russian constructivism, was awarded a 5-star rating by Skytrax, a leading international aviation ratings organization.
In late 2018, the Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsia) and Sheremetyevo signed the first concession agreements for airports of the Moscow Aviation Hub regarding plans for new construction and reconstruction of airport infrastructure at Sheremetyevo for 49 years.
Overall, 2018 for Sheremetyevo was marked by the completion of the first stage of the Long-Term Development Program to 2026. In 2019, the publicly funded third independent runway and the first stage of Terminal C for international airlines are scheduled to be commissioned.
One of the results of the efficient management of the airport is Sheremetyevo leading in OAG global on-time performance rankings and ACI's ASQ (airport service quality) ratings in the category of major European airports with passenger traffic of over 40 million passengers per year.
Sheremetyevo's route network includes over 220 destinations, 84 of which are unique to the Moscow Aviation Cluster. In 2018, British Airways, Cham Wings, Rossiya Airlines, Ural Airlines, and Azur Air
began flying from Sheremetyevo. Soon, Belavia, Vietnam Airlines and Brussels Airlines are scheduled to introduce flights departing from the airport.
