More than 20 of the Mi-24, Mi-8AMTSh, Mi-35M and Ka-52 strike helicopters scrambled at the training grounds in the Leningrad and Pskov regions to test the new ambush techniques.
The idea of the new technique is that the helicopter pairs are placed in camouflaged forest areas. When the imaginary enemy breaks through, helicopters take off from shelters and hit targets with rocket-and-cannon armament.
When flying to the target from natural shelters and forests, crews use missile-and-cannon armament against targets at distances from 500 m to 5 km, as well as from extremely low altitudes. When the firing is over, the helicopter occupies the shelter again covered by aircraft flying just behind.
Such actions considerably expand the army aviation capabilities and make it possible to effectively counteract a highly mobile enemy.
About 100 military flight and engineering personnel take part in the practical actions, more than 20 combat helicopters are involve in the drills.
