Following a request from the Armenian Government, the Russian Government has ordered the Ministry for Emergency Situations to send a water-bombing Ilyushin Il-76 plane to the city of Yerevan to fight wildfires in Khosrov Reserve. The plane is going to start putting out fires in the worst-hit areas shortly.

In one round the Emergency Ministry’s jet is capable of dropping more than 42 tons of water on fires and of creating an 800-meter-long and 60-meter-wide line of about 50 thousand sq. meters in area. It is one of the world’s largest tanker aircraft.

The crew of the Il-76 are trained to work under complex conditions and have extensive experience in fighting wildfires. They have participated in response operations both in Russian and abroad.

A large fire started in Khosrov Reserve in Ararat, Armenia, 61 km to the southeast of Yerevan on 12 August. Hundreds of hectares are on fire now.
