S7 Airlines, a oneworld^® global airline alliance member, was included in the list of the greenest airlines in the world, according to the climate protection organisation Atmosfair. The annual rating was presented at the UN Climate Change Conference in Bonn.

In its study, Atmosfair estimated the greenhouse gas emissions of more than 200 of the world’s leading airlines. S7 Airlines was ranked 20 and became the only Russian airline in the top 50 list. When compiling the rating, the experts took into account the amount of CO2 emissions in tons per passenger-kilometre.

Reducing the negative impact on the environment is an important activity of S7 Airlines. When it comes to the development of its air fleet, the airline focuses on the latest designs of the world’s leading manufacturers, as modern aircraft boast greater efficiency and environmental friendliness compared to aircraft of the previous generation.

In summer, S7 Airlines was the first Russian airline to operate modern Airbus A320neo aircraft with improved environmental performance. Gradually, the aircraft of the renewed family will replace all Airbus A320 aircraft in its air fleet. S7 Airlines has also signed the contract for the delivery of new Boeing 737 MAX scheduled for 2018. The company will become the first Russian operator of these aircraft of the new type.

Airbus A320neo is equipped with the latest Pratt & Whitney Pure Power PW1100G-JM engines, which reduce fuel consumption, and Sharklets wing tips made of composite materials, which improve the aerodynamic characteristics of the aircraft. The results of the first months of operation of new aircraft have shown, that on average the fuel consumption is reduced up to 20%, depending on the route, which significantly reduces CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. In addition, Airbus A320neo, the quietest aircraft of its class, has the area of the sound wake when taking off that is 50% less than that of the aircraft of the previous generation.
