The Su-34 bombers of WMD Air Force unit located in Voronezh Oblast operated the Khibiny electronic warfare (EW) system in Astrakhan Oblast.

The pilots covered more than 1,000 km to reach the Kapustin Yar training ground.

According to the exercise plan, the crews were to overwhelm hostile ground-based air defence radars. Using the onboard EW systems, they set deception targets for ground EW systems, concealing their location from radars. Then bombers conducted electronic launches at targets simulating air defence systems.

The exercise involved 10 bombers and more than 300 servicemen of air and engineer personnel of WMD bomber air regiment.
