Moscow Domodedovo gives update on development projects

Moscow Domodedovo International Airport will be able to handle a combined passenger capacity of 55-58 million in its existing T1 and T2 terminals when T2 construction is complete in 2018, according to airport owner and chairman of the board Dmitry Kamenshchik. Writes ATWonline.

The next phase, T3, which currently in the design stage, is scheduled to open in 2023.

The new runway at Domodedovo is on track to open at the end of 2017. Two independent runways will allow the airport to increase traffic up to 65 million per year.

The T2 terminal project will cost airport private investors approximately RUB32 billion ($500 million), which excludes runway construction as the airfield belongs to the government. According to Russian legislation, airfields cannot be privatized and remain government property even if the airport is managed by a private company and its terminal infrastructure was bought or rented privately. Kamenshchik said he does not plan to attract any partners or to sell its business.

The airport owner clarified Domodedovo development plans after authorities dropped all criminal charges against him Sept. 23. Kamenshchik was accused of establishing inappropriate security measures at the airport that led to the terrorist attack that occurred on Jan. 24, 2011, when 37 people were killed and 172 were injured. He was detained in February 2016.
