Russian Cosmonauts to Make Probiotic Fermented Milk Product at ISS

Should the experiment prove successful, the milk will be used as a probiotic during long-term missions to the moon and Mars.

Russian cosmonauts on the upcoming expedition to the International Space Station (ISS) will conduct an experiment to produce a fermented milk-based product with beneficial health properties at the ISS, the Yuri A. Gagarin State Scientific Research-and-Testing Cosmonaut Training Center (GCTC) said Wednesday in a statement.

"Russian cosmonauts on the ISS- 49/50 expedition, Sergei Rizhikov and Andrei Borisenko, are preparing an experiment for the International Space Station to produce the actively therapeutic and prophylactic probiotic product 'Probiovit,'" the statement reads.

Should the experiment prove successful, Probiovit will be used as a probiotic during long-term missions to the moon and Mars, according to the statement.

The ISS-49/50 expedition is due to commence in September 2016.
