Russia’s Federal Agency for Special Construction (Spetsstroy) is currently building nine airfields and other infrastructural facilities in the Arctic for the Defense Ministry, the Spetsstroy press office said on July 21.

"Spetsstroy is currently building and reconstructing the Severomorsk-1 and Nagurskoye airfields on the Alexandra Land Island of the Franz Josef archipelago, the Rogachyovo aerodrome in the Arkhangelsk Region, the Tiksi airfield in the Sakha Republic and the Temp aerodrome on Kotelny Island," the press office said.

"Spetsstroy is also carrying out design and survey works on the Severomorsk-3 and Naryan-Mar airfields in the Murmansk and the Arkhangelsk Regions, respectively, and the Vorkuta, Alykel and Anadyr aerodromes in the Komi Republic, the Krasnoyarsk Territory and the Chukotka Autonomous District, correspondingly," the press office added.

According to the press office, the reconstructed Nagurskoye airfield will be able to receive Ilyushin Il-78 (NATO reporting name: Midas) aerial refueling planes.

Work is currently under way at the airfield to lay the foundation for two taxiways, ramps and other sites of various purposes, the press office added.
