The trials of the Voronezh-DM radar station making part of the missile early warning system will be completed within several years, chairman of the board of directors at Russia’s Radio-Technical and Information Systems Enterprise Sergei Boyev said.

"The high-potential Voronezh-DM radar station is expected to complete state trials near Murmansk [in north Russia] within several years. Work is currently under way at this facility to lay the foundation for a big radar in a mountainous area at an altitude of more than 400 meters above the sea level," Boyev said.

"The radar will be used for airspace surveillance over the Arctic that is the main ballistic missile approach," he added. According to the chairman, the advanced powerful ultra-high-frequency radar will replace the Dnepr radar in the north of Russia.

The Voronezh-DM radar will be able to pinpoint the launch sites of ballistic missiles at a large distance and track them. The Voronezh-DM (77Ya6-DM) works in the decimeter range (UHF) and was designed by NPK NIIDAR. It has a range of 6,000 km and is capable of simultaneously tracking 500 objects.
