Russia’s UTair Aviation has signed an agreement of intent with the Ministry of Transport and Ministry of North Caucasus Affairs to develop a route network in the North Caucasus region, ATWonline reported.
UTair plans to launch ATR 72 service from Mineralnye Vody and Sochi to Astrakhan, Belgorod, Volgograd, Voronezh, Kazan, Krasnodar, Makhachkala, Rostov-on-Don, Saratov and Samara. The carrier is expected to operate 5,500 roundtrip flights per year to these destinations. The project will run from January to April 2017.
According to UTair Passenger Airline president Alexey Budnik, the new program will allow for a passenger increase of up to 280,000 per year at Sochi and Mineralnye Vody airports.
Sochi International Airport, the fifth biggest in the country, handled 2.1 million passengers in 1H 2016, up 36.4% year-over-year (YOY). Mineralnye Vody Airport handled 802,404 passengers in 1H 2016, down 15.1% YOY. The locally based carrier, Kavminvodyavia, ceased operations in September 2011.
UTair Aviation is based at Tyumen and Surgut airports in Western Siberia, as well as in Moscow Vnukovo Airport, from which it operates up to 160 daily flights. It is the fourth biggest airline in Russia and carried 4.3 million passengers from January-August 2016, up 13.7% YOY. UTair’s fleet consists of more than 60 aircraft, including Boeing 737s, ATR 72s and Antonov An-74s.
