Moscow airports' international traffic down 10.4% in 2015

Moscow’s three airports—Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo and Vnukovo—handled 37.9 million passengers in 2015, down 10.4% year-over-year (YOY), according to statistics released by Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsia) reported by ATWonline.

Domodedovo handled 30.5 million international and domestic passengers, down 7.7% YOY, which was the biggest loss. Sheremetyevo handled 31.3 million passengers, up 0.1% YOY, and Vnukovo handled 15.8 million passengers, up 24.2%.

In December 2015, Vnukovo’s traffic fell 24.7% YOY to 735,144 and Domodedovo’s traffic dropped 9%, to 1.9 million. However, traffic at Sheremetyevo was up 4.1% to 2.3 million passengers.

December’s decrease at Vnukovo and Domodedovo could be due to Transaero collapse in October 2015 and the Turkey and Egyptian charters ban.

The downward trend  in Russia’s international traffic started at the end of 2014 and continued through 2015. It forced several international carriers, such as Lufthansa,Cathay Pacific and airberlin, to cut operations at Russian destinations.
