In September specialists of TsAGI completed the testing of load-carrying capability of MS-21-300 aircraft’s metal-composite tail wing box. The wing box was designed by Irkut Corporation and manufactured by Aviastar-SP (Ulyanovsk) and ONPP Technologiya (Obninsk), press-service of TsAGI reports.

“Testing of load-carrying capability assumes defining actual strength of the load-carrying tail wing box; it is defined by means of applying increasing load to the component until destruction. Condition of the component after the tests allows continuing studies related to specific problems in the area of strength of composite load-carrying components. At present specialists of TsAGI and Irkut Corporation are analyzing the obtained data and discussing further steps,” said in the statement.

These experiments are of great importance for MS-21-300 project. This is the first strength test of the full-scale component made of composites manufactured in Russia. Destruction of the component happened in accordance with calculations. The claimed strength of the component has been confirmed. The obtained data is of great importance in terms of preparation for flight testing of MS-21-300 scheduled for 2016,” Deputy Head of TsAGI Strength Department, Head of static and thermal strength division, Alexander Dzuba.

«I would like to praise the professionalism of specialists of TsAGI’s Strength Department demonstrated during implementation of our joint projects. Successful cooperation will result in creation of the next-generation highly competitive airliner,” Irkut Corporation Vice-President, Aircraft Development, Chief Designer of MS-21-300 aircraft, Konstantin Popovich.
