Russia is developing an engine for light combat aircraft and UAVs

Tushino machine-building design bureau Soyuz is developing a next-generation aircraft engine having a thrust of 2,5 tons, Interfax-AVN reports with reference to Soyuz CEO Alexander Puzich.

“This project is being implemented under a 3-year state contract with Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade. Research and development work should be completed in the fourth quarter of 2015,” the source said. According to A. Puzich the new engine is designed for light combat aircraft (like Yak-130) and UAVs. According to Central Institute of Aviation Motors (CIAM), the engine developed by Soyuz outmatches Ukrainian AI-222-25 (currently installed on Yak-130 jets) in terms of technical level and performance.

The specialists also noted that it would be relatively easy to prepare and start its mass production. A.Puzich noted that the new engine is being developed on the basis of RD-1700 engine core. Some technical solutions used during development of RD-2500 engine will also be implemented. The new engine will be fitted with state-of-the-art indigenous digital control system.

A.Puzich added that some decisions related to the engine would be announced at MAKS-2015 airshow. Soyuz design bureau developed over 40 types and modifications of aircraft jet engines; 22 of them were put into mass production. Engines developed by Soyuz powered MiG-21, MiG-23ML, MiG-27, MiG-29, Yak-28, Su-22 aircraft, etc.
