EMERCOM is going to purchase AgustaWestland helicopters

In the network of development of emergency services EMERCOM is going to purchase the latest twin-engine AgustaWestland helicopters assembled in Moscow Region, RIA Novosti reports.

Today EMERCOM has eight aviation centers, which are located in Zhukovsky (Moscow Region), Pulkovo-2 airport (near St. Petersburg), Rostov-on-Don, Nizhny Novgorod, Yekaterinburg, Mineralnie Vodi, Krasnoyarsk and Khabarovsk. The “Yuzhniy” aviation center’s (located in Rostov-on-Don) area of responsibility also includes Crimea.

At present the ministry operates more than 70 aircraft: Il-76 transport aircraft, Be-200 amphibian aircraft, An-148 jets used for medevac operations. EMERCOM also operates Mi-8 and Ka-32 helicopters as well as the world’s largest Mi-26 transport rotorcraft and light Bo-105 and BK-117 rescue helicopters used for carrying out search-and-rescue operations under severe conditions.

“State-of-the-art indigenous aircraft will be delivered to the ministry (Sukhoi Superjet 100, Il-76, Tu-214, Mi-8MTV, Augusta Westland helicopters, etc.),” stated in the “EMERCOM-2030: advanced state management technologies in the area of life safety”.

EMERCOM is going to purchase aircraft worth 235 million rubles. At present Helivert enterprise (located in Tomilino, Moscow Region) is carrying out assembly of AW139 helicopters (since 2012) and AW189 (decision was made in 2014). AgustaWestland (Italy) owns 40%-share in this joint venture, Russian Helicopters Holding Company (part of Rostec State Corporation) – 30%, Rosneft – 30%. It is expected that Rosneft will sign a contract with Helivert for delivery of 150 helicopters.

AW139 multi-role helicopter was developed by Italy in cooperation with UK; the vehicle performed its maiden flight in 2001. The rotorcraft’s maximum speed is 310 km/h, range — 1250 km. AW189 medium twin-engine helicopter performed its maiden flight in 2011. Its maximum takeoff weight is 8,3 tons, maximum cruise speed is 287 km/h, range — 370 km.

The helicopters may perform offshore flights, take part in search-and-rescue operations, transport cargo and passengers (including VIP version fitted with a special cabin).
