The whole fleet of Ka-27 helicopters and long-range anti-submarine Tu-142 aircraft operated by naval aviation of Russian navy will be upgraded by 2018-2020, RIA Novosti reports with reference to a source close to Russian military-industrial sector.

Today Russian navy operates about 20 Tu-142 aircraft and 50 Ka-27 helicopters. “Upgrade of Tu-142 will be carried out in compliance with performance specification developed by the navy; it will be completed in 3 or 5 years and will include significant upgrade of the vehicle’s avionics suite,” the source said.

He added that in the course of the upgrade carried out by Zaslon Company, the aircraft would be fitted with the latest anti-submarine equipment as well as new navigation equipment and weapon control system. Beriev Aircraft Company and Radar-MMS will also take part in upgrade of Tu-142 aircraft. “Ka-27 antisubmarine helicopters will be upgraded in parallel: the vehicles will be fitted with new weapons and EW suites,” representative of the military-industrial sector said.

According to him, this refers to radar with active phased antenna array, which is a part of radar command and tactical system. According to the source, Ka-27 helicopters are being upgraded by Phasotron-NIIR and Dalpribor companies.
