Russia is not giving up on the project for development of nuclear engine for spacecraft

Russia is not giving up on the project for development of nuclear engine for spacecraft travelling to deep space; it is included in the draft Federal Space Program for 2016-2025, RIA Novosti reports.

Earlier mass media reported with reference to an independent source that Roscosmos is going to terminate the project for megawatt nuclear engine for spacecraft travelling to deep space.

The nuclear powerplant with a power of around 1 MW is still part of the program; however, its development should be completed in 2029-2030 (according to the draft program).

“Roscosmos continues development of key technologies intended for development of launch vehicles with reusable upper stages, space tugs powered by electric or nuclear engines. Information about excluding these projects from the Federal Space Program 2016-2025 is not correct,” Igor Burenkov, official representative of Roscosmos, said.
