Russian traveller Fedor Konyukhov is going to set a Russian and world record for duration of hot air balloon flight, Vesti.ru reports.

The traveller will fly the АХ-9 type balloon with a volume of 3 950 cubic meters. It is planned to store from 32 to 36 gas tanks onboard the balloon.

Ivan Menyailo, master of sports in ballooning, will perform this flight together with Konyukhov. The process will be controlled by sport commissioners from the Federation of Aeronautical Sports of Russia, Damir Mengazetdinov and Sergey Bazhenov. The flight will be performed in March 2015; it was initially planned that the balloon would take off from Pakhomovo airfield (Tula Region), said in the statement posted at the traveller’s official website.

“Our objective is to optimize the fuel consumption during flight, gas tanks filled with propane (weight of each tank is 23 kg) will be attached to the gondola. Temperature inside the balloon shell is 120-130 degrees,” Ivan Menyailo explained.

The balloon has passed acceptance of the enterprise and Aviation Registry of the Insterstate Aviation Committee. The balloon shell is made of high-tech silicon material.

In order to set the Russian record duration of the crew’s flight must be about 18 hours, in order to beat the world record the balloon must stay in the air for more than 29 hours.

The current Russian record in this area is 17 hours 49 minutes; it was set by Russian pilot Vladimir Gladkov in February 2013 in Tula Region. The world record is 29 hours 14 minutes and 35 seconds; it was set by US pilot William Bussey in January 1993.
