Russia will retrofit an aircraft repair plant in India in order to provide after-sales support for Russian helicopters

Russia will retrofit an aircraft repair plant located in Chandigarh (India) in order to provide after-sales support services for Russian-produced helicopters delivered to the region. It was stated by the head of Russian delegation at Aero India 2015, Deputy Director General of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSMTC), Anatoly Punchuk, TASS reports.

“At present in the network of an offset agreement (part of a contract for delivery of Mi-17V5 helicopters) a state-of-the-art MRO center is being established in Chandigarh; it will provide MRO services for Russian-produced helicopters, - Punchuk said. – In particular, the Chandigarh-based repair plant will be fitted with a repair line intended for VK-2500 engines and 16 repair lines for repairing instruments, equipment and helicopter rotors”.

According to him, upon completion of this work the overhaul of almost all Russian-produced helicopters operated in the country will be carried out in Chandigarh. The opening of the new center will help decrease the cost and improve the quality of the after-sales support services as well as decrease the downtime of Russian-produced helicopters.

The head of Russian delegation added that a joint venture established by Russian Helicopters Holding Company and Vectra Group (India) in 2011 in order to provide MRO services “unfortunately ceased its activities for a variety of reasons”.

At the same time the helicopter fleet operated by India requires a new MRO center. In particular, Indian Ministry of Defense operates about 200 Russian-produced transport helicopters, Punchuk noted.
