Deliveries of S-350E Vityaz medium-range air defense system will be started in 2016, RIA Novosti reports with reference to Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Military-Industrial Commission of Russia, Oleg Bochkarev.
“Vityaz project is on schedule – the work is being completed. This vehicle is definitely a great one – its characteristics are excellent. In the near term it will be put into service. Deliveries should have been started in 2014, but the schedule has been changed. In 2016 deliveries will certainly be started,” Bochkarev said.
He explained that there are some difficulties connected with the start of its mass production, as in case with any new vehicle.
S-350E Vityaz air defense system includes the self-propelled launcher, all-aspect radar featuring an electronic scanning of space and a command post installed on the BAZ special vehicle. The system comprises two medium-range missiles used by S-400 air defense system, as well as short-range missiles. The new system should replace D-300PS air defense system using V55R missiles, which will be put out of operation in 2015.
CEO of Almaz-Antey Concern, which developed Vityaz system, Yan Novikov said earlier, that mass production of the system would be started in 2015.
