The engine of Russian fifth-generation multi-role T-50 fighter (PAK FA) may be started without oxygen as against previous aircraft, which used oxygen feed system, RIA Novosti reports with reference to the CEO of Aviation Equipment Holding Company (part of Rostec), Maxim Kuzyuk.

“In the course of development of PAK FA we were tasked to ensure the “oxygen-free” engine start. Plasma ignition system is installed in combustion chamber and afterburner. The design of fuel nozzle was changed: in parallel with the fuel supply a plasma arc is generated,” Kuzyuk said.

He stressed that the engine start system and auxiliary power unit (APU) of PAK FA are “unique” and “have no analogues”. “So far all the ignition systems used oxygen feed systems in order to improve altitude performance and ensure safe engine inflight start; however, the system requires installation of an oxygen system and certain airfield infrastructure,” Kuzyuk said adding that his company is developing “a number” of components and systems for PAK FA fifth-generation fighter.

Aviation Equipment Holding Company is taking part in development of Russian-Indian fifth-generation fighter – FGFA (derived from PAK FA). Its engine will also be able to start without oxygen feed system.
