The representative of the Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) Valeriy Zaichko delivered a speech at the 52nd session of scientific and technical subcommittee of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and told the participants about Roscosmos’ achievements in the area of Earth remote sensing, the agency’s press-service reports.
The Russian government’s decision to remove restrictions on using remote sensing data obtained from Russian spacecraft helped improve the quality and the number of services in this area. Roscosmos in its own turn launched high-resolution Earth remote sensing satellites “Resurs-P” No 2 and keeps on developing the national geographically-distributed information system for obtaining, processing, storing and sharing the Earth remote sensing data.
“In 2015 the system will keep on developing: 4 more Earth remote sensing spacecraft should be launched this year (“Resurs-P” No 3 with a resolution better than 1 meter; “Meteor-M” No 2-1 with a surveying instruments having a resolution of 50-70 meters, swath width of 1000 km and capable of global monitoring of the territory of Russia in 2 or 3 days; “Kanopus-V-IK” with IR surveillance equipment and geostationary hydrometeorological spacecraft “Elektro-L” No 2 with Earth sensing equipment,” said in the statement.
In 2014 specialists of Roscosmos participated in international projects for development of global Earth remote sensing system. One of the most important areas is cooperation with EMERCOM in the network of the International Charter on Space and Major Disasters, which allows using additional resources for space-based surveillance, including the UN-SPIDER project. Last year representatives of Roscosmos took part in 15 activations of the Charter – Meteor-M No1, Kanopus-V No1 and Resurs-P No1 spacecraft were used for surveillance.
