Nicaragua is going to purchase a batch of fighters, including MiG-29 multi-role jets, in order to fight drug traffic in coastal areas, TASS reports with reference to Brigadier General Adolfo Zepeda.
“We are going to purchase combat aircraft, which will be used for defensive purposes only, not for aerial attacks,” the general noted. According to him, Nicaragua “is not going to create a threat for its neighbors”.
“Authorities of our country obey the terms and conditions of the international law, and it settles disputes with other countries on the basis of judgment made by the Permanent Court of Arbitration,” he added.
The Permanent Court of Arbitration based in Hauge made a decision to place 75 thousand square kilometers of the Caribbean Sea area under control of Nicaragua (previously this territory was controlled by Columbia). The authorities of Nicaragua are going to take additional measures in this area in order to ensure safety of the country’s borders and fight the drug traffic.
The armed forces of Nicaragua also believe that it is necessary to purchase more patrol vessels. Among other things, they are considering the possibility of purchasing Russian-produced ships.
Recently Russian Minister of Defense Sergey Shoygu visited Nicaragua; he also visited Venezuela and Cuba.
