Russia Has No Plans to Completely Cut Air Transportation With Turkey

The Russian authorities are not planning to stop completely flights between Russia and Turkey as part of response to the downing of a Russian Su-24 by the Turkish air force, Transportation Minister Maksim Sokolov said Wednesday.

"Such a possibility is not being considered at this point. We are fulfilling relevant orders by the Russian president and directives by the Russian government," Sokolov said.

On Tuesday, the Russian government backed a proposal by President Vladimir Putin to impose economic restrictions against Turkey due to security concerns in light of the November 24 incident with the Russian warplane.

The measures, due to take effect on January 1, 2016, include a ban on charter air travel between the two countries, directions to travel agencies not to sell tours to Russian citizens that involve visiting Turkey and restricts on the import of certain goods from Turkey.

The measures also target activities of Turkish organizations in Russia and ban Russian employers from hiring Turkish citizens.
