The successful landing of the first stage of the two-stage Falcon 9 rocket back on Earth may help to decrease spacecraft manufacturing costs, Russian space agency Roscosmos head Igor Komarov said Thursday.

Earlier this week, the US SpaceX aerospace manufacturer's Falcon 9 successfully landed upright about 6 miles from where it was launched at Cape Canaveral, Florida, after having propelled 11 satellites into Earth's orbit. This is the first time an orbital rocket has successfully completed a controlled landing on Earth.

"We hope that what the US manufacturers are doing will lead to a decline in spacecraft manufacturing costs in the future," Komarov told reporters.

According to the Roscosmos head, the Russian Federal Space Program 2016-2025 also includes projects aimed at developing returnable carrier rockets.
