Runway commissioned under Ashgabat International Airport construction

A runway, an air-traffic control tower and other facilities were put into operation in Ashgabat,Turkmenistan, as these are the parts of the new international airport that is currently being built in Ashgabat, as it was designed to become the main “air gates” of Turkmenistan.

According to the “National Programme for Civil Aviation Development in Turkmenistan for 2012-2030”, the capital city of Ashgabat and provinces of Turkmenistan construct new and modernize existing airports. Construction of the new international airport in Ashgabat started in 2013 is the largest project, which is a part of this Programme.

An artificial runway (runway) with main and connecting taxiways equipped with air navigation, radio, lights and alarm system meets all requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). This runway having a length of 3,800 metersand a width of 75 metersis capable to take all types of air transport in any weather conditions.

A 65-meter high flight control tower with its sophisticated electronic and technical “stuffing”, including the ultra-modern air navigation equipment is a “think tank” of the system for management, tracking and monitoring of air traffic and, at the same time, this is a bright dominant of the architectural ensemble of the airport. Administrative, supervisory, technical and other services are located on six floors of this building having a total area of 7,000 square meters. Here, one has installed the equipment from the Thales Company, France, to create optimal conditions for the staff.

In addition, a two-storey building with a four-storey tower, designed for fire and rescue service and the security service were commissioned. There are five specialized extinguishing machines, produced by Zeigler, Germany, at their disposal.

Currently, the project completes the construction of a cargo terminal with its carrying capacity of  200,000 metric tons of cargos per year and a building designed to serve food supply for aircraft. Main passenger and VIP-terminals, a technical center with hangars designed for concurrent maintenance and repairs of five aircraft, a medical center, a center for pilots and flight attendants and other objects are quickly built.

Having familiarized with these new buildings, the participants of the celebration witnessed the take-off and landing of the Boeing airliner on the new runway.

According to the national tradition, the older generation made a ritual blessing on the occasion of new specialized ground equipment arrival in the airport, as it was designed for aircraft maintenance.

Given that the construction of these facilities is carried out in the grounds of the acting airport, the provided objects are put into operation in stages. For example, a passenger Terminal-2 and an administrative building for Turkmenistan Airlines were opened last year in the new complex with its total area of 1,200 hectares. In June 2015, one has launched a school for air transport workers’ training.
