Russian Minister of Transport confirmed that A321 aircraft collapsed in the air

During a meeting with the President of Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, Minister of Transport, Maxim Sokolov, confirmed that Russian A321 jet collapsed in the air, RIA Novosti reports.

Executive Director of Interstate Aviation Committee Viktor Sorochenko reported that the aircraft collapsed in the air and its fragments fell all over the area of 20 square kilometers. EMERCOM reported that the rescue teams are carrying out search-and-rescue operation exactly in this area.

“We worked at the crash site yesterday… After visual examination it was defined that the jet operated by Kogalymavia, which departed from Shram el-Sheikh on October 31st 2015 to St. Petersburg, collapsed in the air 23 minutes after the takeoff; its fragments fell all over the area of 20 square kilometers,” Sokolov said. Maxim Sokolov is the head of governmental commission on investigation of the crash of the Kogalymavia’s jet in Egypt. He returned to Moscow from Cairo on November 2nd.

The largest air accident in the history of Russia and USSR happened on Saturday October 31st 2015: Airbus A321 airliner operated by Kogalymavia (works under Metrojet brand), which was performing flight from Sharm el-Sheikh to St. Petersburg, crashed. 224 people were onboard, all of them died. The governmental commission was established in order to investigate the crash; it is headed by Sokolov.
