Russia Lodges Official Protest With Turkish Attache Over Downed Su-24

Russia has lodged an official protest with the Turkish military attache over its downed Su-24 jet, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The Russia Defense Ministry is considering Turkish actions in Syria [downing a Russian Su-24 jet over Syria] as unfriendly act, the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry also stated that it had lodged an official protest with Turkey's military attache over the incident.

"We are considering actions of the Turkish air forces as an unfriendly act," the statement read.

Russia will continue carrying out airstrikes against terrorists in Syria despite Tuesday's downing of a Su-24M bomber aircraft by neighboring Turkey, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.

​"Military action against terrorists in Syria will continue," the statement reads.

The ministry underscored that the Su-24 jet had not crossed into Turkish airspace and operated exclusively on Syrian territory.

The Russian Defense Ministry tried to establish emergency communications with the Turkish side right after the incident. But those attepmts were not successful, the press-service of the Russian Defense Ministry said.

On Tuesday morning a Russian Su-24M Fencer jet crashed in Syria with two pilots aboard. Ankara claims Turkish F-16s shot down the plane because it violated the country's airspace. Contrary to Turkey’s accusations, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the aircraft was 0.6 miles away from Turkey when it was shot down.
