Sergey Shoygu: ISS is developing six space system for Russian Ministry of Defense

Russian Minister of Defense, General of the Army Sergey Shoygu checked the status of development of spacecraft intended for Russian Ministry of Defense; the space systems are being developed by Academician M.F. Reshetnev Information Satellite Systems, Interfax-AVN reports.

“At present six space systems are being developed on behalf of the Russian Ministry of Defense,” S. Shoygu said at a meeting dedicated to production of military satellites by Academician M.F. Reshetnev Information Satellite Systems (ISS).

S. Shoygu reminded that the ISS manufactured Meridian communications spacecraft in 2014.

“Its launch marked the completion of set up of the satellite constellation (in this class). The development of relay spacecraft is being completed,” the minister said.

ISS CEO Nikolai Testoedov told the minister about measures aimed at phasing out imports in the area of defense products.

S. Shoygu visited workshops responsible for production of spacecraft on behalf of Russian Ministry of Defense. 

ISS is one of the leading enterprises of the Russian space industry. 

The enterprise has taken part in implementation of over 30 projects in the area of communications, relaying, navigation, geodesy and scientific studies. Over 1200 spacecraft have been designed, manufactured and launched.

Deputy Minister of Defense Yuri Borisov, Head of Directorate General of Communications of the General Staff Lieutenant General Khalil Arslanov, Commander-in-Chief of the Aerospace Defense Forces Lieutenant General Alexander Golovko, Commander-in-Chief of the Central Military District Colonel General Vladimir Zarudnitski as well as representatives of the Federal Space Agency took part in the meeting.
