The first MS-21 flying prototype will be manufactured in 2015; its maiden flight is scheduled for 2016, RIA Novosti reports with reference to the Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, Yuri Slusar.
“We are looking forward for the first MS-21 flying prototype (Russian short- and medium-haul passenger aircraft); production will be completed in December 2015,” Slusar noted. According to him, the airliner should receive IAC certification (Interstate Aviation Committee) in late 2017 or early 2018. The first jet of the type will be put into operation in 2018.
“MS-21 is the top-priority project in the civil aircraft segment; we see it as a powerhouse in terms of development of cutting-edge technologies in the area of aerodynamics, engines, avionics, etc. This airliner will outmatch its rivals in terms of aircraft performance, comfort and economics. It will be more efficient than upgraded versions of foreign aircraft, which are being developed,” Slusar said.
According to him MS-21 Family aircraft seating from 130 to 211 passengers are going to enter the most popular market segment, which is at present occupied by foreign analogues.
According to Slusar, MS-21’s wing will be made of light and durable composites and the jet will offer a high level of comfort thanks to wide aisles, which allow increasing the speed of passenger flows during boarding and passengers unloading. “Thanks to short turnaround time air carriers may save up to $2 million per year,” he added.
