UAV test sites will be created in Russia

The specialized UAV test ranges will be created in Russia soon. Igor Denisov, Deputy Director General of the Russian Foundation for Advanced Research Projects in the Defense Industry, told ITAR-TASS about it at the Military-industrial conference.

"The Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Industry and Trade are considering the possibilities for creating UAV test sites", - he said without specifying the project completion date.

Denisov also noted that Russia is developing new combat UAVs, but the development is at an early stage. "The problem is that a decision to destroy a target is made by a human anyway. In this regard the concept of UAVs able to seek out and destroy targets by themselves is more like fiction", - the Deputy Director General said.

He reminded that Russia has remotely-controlled equipment fitted with weapons; however, the range of missions carried out by these systems is not so wide compared to analogues operated by USA. "We are developing and upgrading the combat vehicles, but unfortunately this is a small-series production. On the other hand, there are a lot of products, which are not combat UAVs, but feature the same principles – cruise missiles and guided projectiles", - Denisov explained.

The Russian Foundation for Advanced Research Projects in the Defense Industry is working closely with Russian Ministry of Defense in terms of development of advanced UAVs of different types. "We are not duplicating the current State Arms Program, we are developing a scientific and technological advance for future state programs", - he added.
