Briz-M upper stage used as a part of the latest Angara-A5 heavy launch vehicle placed mockup of a satellite into intermediate orbit, RIA Novosti reports with reference to a source close to the space industry.

The latest Russian eco-friendly heavy launch vehicle Angara-A5 was launched from Plesetsk cosmodrome (Arkhangelsk Region) on December 23rd 2014.

“The engines powering Briz-M upper stage (manufactured by Khrunichev State Research and Production Space Center) have been successfully started two times. The mockup of the satellite has been placed into intermediate orbit,” the source said.

Angara family of launch vehicles includes two rocket modules powered by engines using eco-friendly fuel – oxygen and kerosene. The module consists of oxidizer and fuel tanks connected with a spacer plate and an engine compartment. Each module is powered by RD-191 liquid-propellant rocket engine derived from four-chamber engine, which powered Energia launch vehicle and powers Zenit launch vehicle.
