The latest S-500 air defense system will join the Moscow’s missile defense system

The latest S-500 air defense system will join the Moscow’s A-135 missile defense system, Gazeta.ru reports with reference to an anniversary issue dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Russian air defense forces.

«In future S-500 system will join A-135 missile defense system the only one to protect Moscow and a part of the country’s central region. In the near term A-135 system will be replaced by a new one - A-235,» said in the issue.

It is expected that the latest missile defense system will be put into service in 2017.

It was reported earlier that S-500 air defense systems would be used to protect Moscow and central part of Russia. It was also stated that deliveries of S-500 systems to Russian armed forces would be started in 2016. S-500 will be able to detect and destroy 10 ballistic missiles (having a speed of up to 7 km/s) simultaneously as well as warheads of hypersonic cruise missiles.
