The governor of Ulyanovsk Region, Sergey Morozov, has held a meeting dedicated to the airport’s development. Speaking of the results of 2012 the airport’s CEO, Valery Bichkov, noted that 872 flights have been serviced in Ulyanovsk-Vostochny, including revenue flights, test flights and flights performed by aircraft owned by the Ministry of Defense.  It was reported by the press-service of the region’s governor and government of Ulyanovsk Region.
 
According to him, the second flight to Turkey and a flight to Germany will be launched in 2013. The contracts on delivery of cargo through the airport to Asia and South America have been signed. In addition, negotiations on launching flights to UAE and Greece are underway.
 
«The airport’s top-management is paying close attention to improving the quality of service and comfort. In particular, the cosmetic repair of the arrival lounge has been started. Moreover, a part of electro-radio equipment was repaired using the airport’s own funds in 2012; temporary detention facility for passengers suspected of having a dangerous infective disease was constructed; the airport’s transport and equipment were repaired», - the press-service noted.
 
However, it was noted at the meeting that the current state of Ulyanovsk-Vostochny airport is not meeting the requirements of aviation authorities. That is why the airport’s reconstruction was scheduled. `It is planned to complete the reconstruction by 2018 (the work will be started in 2014). FSUE Aviacomplect will act as a customer for this work. The airport control tower, runway, taxi lanes and the apron will be repaired in the network of the airport’s reconstruction.
 
In addition, the project for development of the airport’s surrounding area was presented at the meeting. The project was developed by the Kazanski Giproniiaivaprom, which elaborated the location of port special economic zone.
 
According to the CEO of the company, Boris Tikhomirov, it is necessary to elaborate the concept for development of the whole territory surrounding the Ulyanovsk-Vostochny airport. The presented project assumes creation of several zones separated in accordance with their functional areas including the Ulyanovsk-Vostochny airport’s territory comprising unique runway, executive terminal, refueling facility, territory of port special economic zone, executive, public and business zones, including IT-park, expo center with a world trade center, regional park, recreational, educational and trade zones, etc.
