A large international airport may be constructed near the road from Moscow to St. Petersburg, Izvestiya reports. The passengers will be able to make it to Moscow from the new airport in one hour and to St. Petersburg – in 3 hours using Sapsan.
As reported by the First Deputy Director General of Moscow transport hub, Viktor Eremin, this location of the airport was offered by GosNII Aeronavigatsia (State Research and Development Institute of Aeronavigation). He explained that according to experts, Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo airports will be servicing 120 million passengers per year by 2025 (their maximum capacity). In this regard it is necessary to build the new large international airport located in Moscow Region. The selection of the airport’s location will be started in July, when a consortium of companies, developing a model of Moscow Air Cluster, will present the final results of its work.
The experts have announced several possible locations of the new airport. The following airports are taking interest in the project: Ermolino, Ramenskoe and Klin-5, Viktor Ermolin said. At the same time GosNII Aeronavigatsia believes that the airport needs new site located 80-120 km to the north-west of Moscow.
According to the Director of GosNII Aeronavigatsia, Sergey Pyatko, the main problem of the Moscow Air Cluster is the great number of intersecting paths of arriving and departing aircraft and official restrictions. According to him, Ramenskoe airport and other ones located near Moscow cannot be used for construction of the new large hub. The new airport should service about a half of the total passenger traffic of the Moscow Air Cluster.
One of the major objectives is entering the market of international through traffic, the counselor of the Minister of Transport, Alexander Yurchick, noted in February during a meeting of the working team responsible for elaboration of the model of Moscow Air Cluster. In this view the airport should be located at a distance from the capital.
