The certification of PD-14 engine intended for MS-21 aircraft was started

In late October 2013 Aviadvigatel passed the mockup stage of certification of the advanced Russian PD-14 engine intended for commercial airliners of the 21st century, the enterprise’s press-service reports.

We remind you that Aviadvigatel submitted an application to Aviation Registry of Interstate Aviation Committee (AR IAC) for certification of PD-14 engine in spring 2013. The engine is being developed in accordance with the Federal Target Program “Development of the aviation industry for 2013-2025”. According to the existing certification rules the engine must pass the mockup stage. The work was being carried out by the mockup committee approved by AR IAC.

«The primary objective of the mockup committee is to assess the completeness of the presented certification basis – the document comprising the requirements in the area of airworthiness and environmental protection for the engine, preliminary assessment of the engine design compliance with the certification basis, assessment of the suggested checks and tests, which will form the evidential base in the area of flight safety. The mockup committee was working at Aviadvigatel during the period from October 28th to November 1st 2013. It was headed by the head of aircraft engines and propellers department of AR IAC, Alexander Bozhkov. The leading specialists of AR IAC, GosNIIGA, Kachestvo Certification Center and Aviadvigatel were included in the mockup commission. The 209th military representative office of the Russian Ministry of Defense acted as a third party inspection», - the press-service explained.

Two subpanels took part in the work of the committee at the mockup stage: «General requirements, design, systems, testing» and «Strength, strength and long duration tests, materials, manufacturing technology». Moreover, the members of the committee inspected the enterprise’s test-bench equipment used for testing PD-14 engine. The mockup committee also analyzed the PD-14’s digital mockup, components and parts of its full-scale prototype. The experts have assessed the sufficiency and completeness of the requirements for the engine, specified in the certification basis elaborated by Aviadvigatel and approved by AR IAC, along with draft program of certification testing and other documents.

«After reviewing the results of our work, the members of the mockup committee noted that PD-14 engine is being developed in accordance with all the requirements of the Aviation Regulations in the area of airworthiness (AP-33 and AP-34) harmonized with the standards of the industry’s leading countries: USA – FAR-33 and Europe – CS-Е. The presented information and nomenclature of certification activities and testing allows the enterprise to prove the compliance of PD-14 engine with the requirements in the area of airworthiness and environmental protection», - Aviadvigatel explained.

The successful completion of the mockup commission’s work allows the enterprise to start preparation for the next stage – certification testing. The testing will be carried out using the test-benches of Aviadvigatel, NPO Saturn and CIAM along with the flying test-bed of Gromov Flight Research Institute. The mockup committee’s protocol was signed by the CEO of AR IAC, Alexander Donchenko, on November 8th 2013.
