The Airborne forces were founded on August 2nd 1930. That day a unit in quantity of 12 people was air dropped for the first time for performing a tactical task in the network of maneuvers of Moscow military district carried out near Voronezh.

The formation of airborne units, which has laid foundation to the massive development of this arm of service, was started in 1932. The corps with the size of over 10000 people each were created in 1941 on the basis of airborne brigades. During the Second World War the troopers displayed mass heroism. They jokingly call themselves “troops for Vasya” in name of General of the Army Vasily Margelov, one of the founders of Airborne forces.

More than 1 million Russians – former and current members of the Airborne forces, are celebrating this holiday every year. The main festivities will take place on August 2nd in five cities: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Ryazan, Tula and Pskov.
