Russian ballistic missile defense squads will acquire target missiles with satellite navigation

Russian Aviaton » Thursday May 24, 2012 18:25 MSK

Russian ballistic missile defense squads will acquire new target missiles with satellite navigation, Lenta.ru reports. It was reported by a source from military-industrial sector. NPO Molniya has secured the order on delivery of these missiles. This refers to delivery of tens of target missiles.

New equipment allows tracing the flight path of the target missile “using reference information from the satellite”. "The received path may be combined with radio line instead of using outdated techniques", - the source noted, adding that the satellite equipment may also be used for liquidation of the target missile.

It is assumed that the satellite equipment will help decrease the operational costs since only satellite system and notebook are needed to control the target missile instead of “rather unhandy” operating controls.

At present Russian anti-aircraft gunners are using several types of training targets. Target missiles converted from guided air defense missiles are usually used for personnel training and testing of advanced air defense systems.
