No decisions on drawing out the air base from Kant (Kirgizia) were taken, RIA Novosti reports. It was stated by the Assistant of Minister of Defense on aviation, General-Colonel, Alexander Zelin.
The disputes over viability of deployment of military facilities, including Russian ones, in the region are taking place.
"As the Commander-in-Chief of the air forces, I have not received any decisions regarding this matter, at least the Air Force Command did not plan any changes connected with our air base in Kant", - Zelin said during briefing in Voronezh, held in the network of conference dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Russian air forces.
According to him, the organization and establishment of the base will remain the same. "I think that everything will go as planned on this base", - the general said.
He noted that the base’s fleet has been modernized recently, including automotive vehicles.
"We have recently renewed the fleet here; great vehicles with good endurance were delivered for performing different missions, including the ones performed on behalf of Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO)", - he said.
At present there are four Russian military facilities in Kirgizia: the air base in Kant, a base for subsurface weapon testing in Karakol, military communication center in Kara-Balt, radio-seismic laboratory in Mayli-Suu. The air base in Kant is the structural subdivision of CSTO.
The president of Kirgizia, Almazbek Atambaev, stated earlier this year while visiting Moscow that the Ministry of Defense has run into debt of about $15 million. The debt is connected with Russian military bases deployed in Kirgizia; Dmitry Medvedev (ex-president of RF) has instructed the appropriate authorities to pay down the debt in ten days. The Kremlin’s press-service has confirmed that Russia is ready to make payment in the nearest future.
As a result, the Kirgiz Ministry of Defense has stated in early March that Russian Ministry of Defense has redeemed its debt of $15,5 million for lease of territories in Kirgizia.
