Russian Aviaton » Wednesday April 18, 2012 15:49 MSK

Russia intends to place the Voronezh early warning radar in Trans-Dniester. The new radar, forming part of missile warning system, may be constructed in Tiraspol, Nezavisimaya gazeta reports.

It would be one of the Russia’s responses to the formation of EuroABM defense and creation of NATO bases in Romania.

As expected, the next round of negotiations on Trans-Dniester settlement should take place in Vienna on April 18th 2012. Moldavia, Trans-Dniester, Russia, Ukraine and USA along with representatives of OSCE and EU will take part in the negotiations.

USA and EU will act as the supervisors at the negotiations. Ukraine, Moldavia and Romania believe that the potential construction of Russian radar in Trans-Dniester will be one of the main topics at the negotiations.

Romanian and Ukrainian mass-media have also reported earlier that Russia may construct the new radar in Trans-Dniester. In addition, they suggested that a military base may also be placed there in exchange for rundown of the Russian operational team to 2000 service members. The mass-media have also speculated about placement of Iskander guided missile systems in Trans-Dniester.

Meanwhile, a source close to the Ministry of Defense of Russia said that Moscow does not intend to place Voronezh radar in Trans-Dniester and Armenia. The military are interested in development of radar network in Russian territory instead – in Leningrad Region, Kaliningrad Region, Irkutsk Region and near Armavir.
