Russian Su-35 fighter may renew its participation in Brazilian FX-2 tender on delivery of 36 combat aircraft, Lenta.ru reports. It has been stated by the Deputy Director of Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSMTC), Alexander Fomin.
"We have no official information regarding the tender’s close-out. We do not know whether it is still continuing or not, and who is the winner. If the tender would be continued - we are ready to cooperate with the Brazilian partner", - Fomin said.
Brazil does not exclude the possibility of Su-35’s further participation in the tender.
Besides Su-35, three jets have been taking part in the tender opened in 2007: Rafale (Dassault, France), F/А-18E/F Super Hornet (Boeing, USA) and JAS 39 Gripen (Saab, Sweden). Rafale and Gripen were the front-runners.
The FX-2 tender assumed the delivery of 36 jets by 2015. 84 more vehicles should have been assembled in Brazil under license by 2024.
The tender has been stopped in spring 2011 due to funding gap. However, Brazilian Minister of Defense, Celso Amorim, set out to India in February 2012 after Rafale has won the MMRCA tender on delivery of 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft. The purpose of his visit was to take an opinion regarding organization of the tender. As reported, the information of Indian party should have helped Brazil to find its position on further organization of FX-2 tender.
During Amorim’s visit some of the mass-media have proposed that Rafale would be the front-runner of Brazilian tender. In addition, a report of Swiss commission saying that JAS 39 Gripen is significantly weaker than Rafale and even F/A-18 Hornet has found its way into internet.
Su-35 is the 4++-generation fighter, however, besides stealth technologies, it meets all the requirements of the fifth-generation. The Russian aircraft has a maximum flight speed of 2,500 km/h and a range of 3400 km. Its combat radius is 1,600 km.
It is equipped with 30-mm cannon and has 12 mounting points for missiles, bombs, etc.
It has been reported in early March that China may acquire 48 Su-35s (total value - $4 billion). It could be the first export deal for Su-35.
