Russian Federation has signed Open Skies Treaty on March 24th 1992, press-service of Russian Ministry of Defense reports. AEX.ru
At present 34 OSCE member countries are taking part in it.
In accordance with the treaty the member countries have a right to perform flights above each other’s territory for the purpose of surveillance over the military activities in order to promote the interstate confidence in the arms control area.
The advantage of this treaty as compared to the other agreements is that the activity connected with the Open Skies Treaty does not interrupt the everyday training and activities of the armed forces.
It has proven its viability and flexibility; the treaty can surely be integrated in the new arms control system, which is currently being formed.
The parties were able to elaborate relevant advisory mechanism for dealing with problems emerging during the treaty’s implementation.
The survey flights are being carried out above the territories of USA, Canada, Europe and Russian Federation.
Over 800 such flights have been performed by the member countries since the signing of the treaty.
