TsAGi has studied the impact of engines and shield on wing devices of MS-21

The specialists of TsAGI have completed the testing of MS-21 aircraft model in T-104 wind tunnel. The purpose of these tests is studying the impact of engines and a shield, which simulates the runway, on root sections of slat and flap, horizontal tail console and aerodynamic performance of diving-rudder, the TsAGI’s press-service reports. Flaps and slats have been deflected in “takeoff” and “landing” modes with fixed angles of attack. The model has been installed in two positions while changing the configuration of wing devices. There is a stand in T-104 wind tunnel, which allows studying the impact of engines’ jet blasts on root sections of slat and flap, horizontal tail and diving-rudder while using the shield.

The impact of the powerplant and shield on wing devices and aircraft controls has been studied for the first time in the national history of experimental studies. The loads and moments, acting on the root sections of slat and flap and horizontal tail, allow defining the stress calculation and the power of steering gear, TsAGI noted.

The results of these tests will help provide the flight safety, in particular, during takeoff and landing, and improve the aircraft’s cost performance.
