Indian air forces intend to upgrade 80 Su-30MKI fighters to “Super Sukhoi” version, Vzglyad.ru reports with reference to ZeeNews portal (India).
According to the portal, Su-30MKI fighters were being put into service in four stages. 80 jets have been acquired at the first stage. In accordance with the existing plan they must be upgraded in the nearest 3-4 years.
It is stated that the Indian air forces have already sent RFIs to the world suppliers of missiles regarding possible delivery of long-range missiles (up to 300 km). These missiles will complement the supersonic BrahMos cruising air-to-surface missiles (about 50 Indian Su-30MKIs will be equipped with these missiles), the portal noted.
The plans for upgrading the fighters assume installation of radars with active phased antenna array and advanced avionics.
The Indian air forces are operating a total of 170 Su-30MKIs (6 squadrons). They plan to purchase another 272 jets. An order for 230 aircraft has already been finalized and a contract on delivery of another 42 fighters should be signed in Delhi in December.
