Russia and India have signed two contracts in the area of military-technical cooperation (the total value of the contracts is assessed at $2,9 billion), RIA Novosti reports.
In particular, the contract on delivery of 71 Mi-17V-5 helicopters to India (total value - $1,3 billion), and another contract on delivery of 42 kits for licensed assembly of Su-30MKI fighters (total value - $1,6 billion) have been signed.
In addition, an agreement on establishing the joint venture between Russian Helicopters Holding Company and Elcom Systems Private Limited was signed in the network of Russian-Indian summit. A memorandum of understanding between FarmEco and Elder Pharmaceuticals (India) was also signed along with a strategic partnership agreement between NIS and TATA Consulting Services.
Military-technical cooperation is one of the most advanced areas of Russian-Indian relations. At present, besides the operating contracts on delivery of Russian-produced weapons and munition, the parties have agreed on co-production of products for military purposes.
One of the most important projects in this area is development of the fifth-generation T-50 fighter (PAK FA). According to the Ministry of Defense, the production of its export version will be launched in 2020.
However, the interaction of the countries in the area of military-technical cooperation was not always passing off without a hitch. One of such examples is the long-drawn project on upgrading Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier. It is expected that this problem will be discussed within the framework of a summit in Delhi. According to United Shipbuilding Corporation, the ship will be delivered to India by the end of 2013.
The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, stated earlier that the plan of export deliveries of military goods was over-fulfilled this year (the total volume of deliveries exceeded $14 billion). The plan of Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation for 2012 assumed the total volume of exports of $13,5 billion.
For reference, the total volume of exports of Russian weapons and military equipment was $13,2 billion in 2011.
