Russian party has delivered six military transport Mi-17-V5 helicopters to Indonesian Ministry of Defense on Friday, thus, the total fleet of such Indonesian vehicles has reached 12 ones, RIA Novosti reports. It has been reported by Russian Technologies’ representative office in Jakarta.
“The delivery is carried out in the network of Russian state credit. The agreement regarding the credit has been signed in 2007", - said the source.
"Indonesia includes about 17000 islands and it needs transport network, including military one, which may cover all its parts, especially those, which may not be covered by medium and large aviation", - said country’s Minister of Defense, Purnomo Yusgiantoro.
The capability of fast maneuvers is necessary due to increasing terrorism and separatism threats, he added, but the Russian helicopters may also be used for delivery of humanitarian help and aerovac.
The Commander in Chief of the Indonesian ground forces, Pramono Edi Vibovo, has noted the helicopter’s large capacity.
"The army will have 18 Mi-17s forming part of 31st squadron of strike helicopters, in order to have capability of transporting the whole battalion", - he said.
The delivery period of six more helicopters has not been specified.
The Indonesian air forces now have 17 Russian helicopters including six new ones (five transport Mi-35Ps and 12 Mi-17-V5s).
Yusgiantoro told RIA Novosti, that the main objective of the Indonesian Ministry of Defense is creation of full-scale squadron of Su fighters including 16 vehicles, during the ceremony of delivery of 3 Мi-35Ps in the end of last year. "We only have ten jets yet, but when we have 16 fighters it will start to provide deterrent effect on anyone who would try to violate the sovereignty of our country", - said the minister.
Indonesia has acquired four combat aircraft from Russia in 2003 and in August 2007 the countries have signed contract on delivery of six more Su fighters. Three Su-30МК2s have been officially delivered to Indonesia on February 2nd 2009, three Su-27SКМs – in the end of last year.
